Configuring Your Browser for Automatic Proxy

*Note: Automatic Proxy is the preferred configuration.*

Using Internet Explorer - Windows OS's

Automatic Proxy works with all versions of MicroSoft Internet Explorer provided by Microsoft (versions 5.0 and up).

  • Open up Internet Explorer.
  • Click on the Tools Menu.
  • Go to Internet Options.
  • Click on the Connections Tab.
  • If you are connecting to the Internet with a standard 56K dial-up, click the Button to the right of the Internet Connection in the white box.
    • This will open up the settings for your Internet Connection.
    • Click on the checkbox for 'Use Automatic Configuration Script'
    • Type http://www.dsf.unica.it/proxy.pac into the Address bar.
  • If you are connecting to the Internet with a Cable or DSL Service, click the button towards the bottom of the Connections tab.
    • This will open up the LAN (Local Area Network) Settings.
    • Click on the checkbox for 'Use Automatic Configuration Script'
    • Type http://www.dsf.unica.it/proxy.pac into the Address bar.
  • Click on the button to return to Internet Options.
  • Click on the button to save the settings.
  • Click on the button to return to the Browser.
  • Internet Explorer for Windows OS's is now configured for Automatic Proxy use.

Using Safari for Macintosh OSX

  • Open Safari
  • Click Safari > Preferences
  • Select 'Advanced'
  • Select 'Proxies: Change Settings...'
  • The 'System Preferences > Network' window opens. The 'Proxies' button should be highlighted. Click to select it if not already highlighted.
  • Under 'Select a proxy server to configure', select 'Automatic Proxy Configuration' and enter http://www.dsf.unica.it/proxy.pac in 'Proxy Configuration File URL:' field.
  • Select 'Apply Now' to save settings
  • Close 'Network' window
  • Close 'Advanced' window
  • Safari is now configured for Automatic Proxy use.

Using Netscape

Netscape Browser v.8.1 is the current browser version and is downloadable from http://www.netscape.com. It works on Windows operating systems XP, 2000, 98, SE and ME.

There is no difference in setup between Windows or Macintosh versions of Netscape.

Using Netscape Browser v.8.1

  • Open up Netscape.
  • Click Tools > Options > General > OK
  • Under 'Connection,' click the 'Connection Settings...' button.
  • Select Automatic Proxy Configuration URL:' radio button.
  • Enter http://www.dsf.unica.it/proxy.pac
  • Click on the button.
  • Click OK to save settings.
  • Netscape Browser is now configured for Automatic Proxy use.

Using Netscape Navigator v.7.1

  • Open Netscape.
  • Click on the Edit > Preferences.
  • Click the arrow to the left of 'Advanced'.
  • Click on 'Proxies'.
  • Select the 'Automatic Proxy Configuration' radio button option.
  • Enter http://www.dsf.unica.it/proxy.pac.
  • Click on the button.
  • Netscape Navigator is now configured for Automatic Proxy use.

Using Firefox

(These instructions were based on Firefox v.1.5.0.1)

  • Click Edit > Preferences or Tools > Options
  • Click on 'Network'
  • Click 'Connection Settings...' under the 'Connection' section
  • Select 'Automatic proxy configuration URL:' radio button
  • Enter http://www.dsf.unica.it/proxy.pac
  • Click OK to save settings

Firefox is now configured for Automatic Proxy use.
